Tucson JCC Celebrates Rosh Hashanah with Community Events
Staff Report / Tucsonlocal.org
The Tucson Jewish Community Center (JCC) has been active in various events and activities leading up to Rosh Hashanah, which starts this evening. Community members have engaged in fitness programs, family initiatives, and cultural events throughout the year.
On Sunday, the JCC hosted a pre-Rosh Hashanah concert featuring Saul Kaye. The concert focused on Kaye's journey of "teshuva," or return, expressed through Jewish blues music. Attendees participated in a reflective experience regarding their own Jewish journeys.
On Monday evening, the JCC hosted the Chabad of Tucson's 11th Annual Mega Challah Bake, attended by over 200 women and girls. The event included prayers and baking, and featured Maya Izoutcheev, a survivor of the October 7 massacre, who delivered a message of strength and unity.
Throughout this week, educational activities for young children included storytelling and art projects related to Rosh Hashanah, with participants creating cards featuring apple stamps.
Additionally, last week, around 20 members from the Tucson JCC, along with representatives from various local organizations, marched in the Tucson Pride parade. This included involvement from Arizona Jews for Pride, the Tucson Jewish Museum, Keshet, and Kol Ami Synagogue. Despite the high temperatures, attendees celebrated LGBTQ+ pride and included the sound of the shofar in the festivities.
The JCC is currently offering sign-ups for fall sports and recreational programs as the new year approaches. They encourage community members to participate in fitness activities, art classes, and workshops aimed at personal growth in the year ahead. The center wishes everyone a Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah.
