Man Caught with Switched, Stolen Plates in Cato

On March 7, 2025, around 4:02 a.m., Deputies from the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office stopped a blue Dodge Charger on E. Main Street in the Village of Cato. The vehicle, operated by Abdul H. Alhariri of Syracuse, was found to have switched license plates and was being driven without a valid New York State license. Alhariri received tickets for operating an unregistered motor vehicle (VTL 401(1)a) and aggravated unlicensed operation (VTL 511(1)a). The plates were removed, and the car was towed to a private residence in Wayne County at the owner’s request.

Later that same morning, at 6:17 a.m., Deputies observed the Charger driving with a New York Commercial license plate on E. Main Street in the Village of Cato. A traffic stop revealed that the newly affixed plate had been stolen in Wayne County. The vehicle was towed and taken to the company’s impound yard. In addition to the previous tickets, Alhariri was issued an Appearance Ticket for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 5th Degree (Penal Law 165.40), as well as further citations for VTL 401(1)a and VTL 511(1)a. He is scheduled to appear in Cato Town Court on March 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.

Anyone with information about this incident may contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at 315-253-1222 or submit a tip online.
