Bend Under Red Flag Warning, Officials Urge Caution

Bend Fire & Rescue said Bend and the surrounding area are currently under a Red Flag Warning.

The agency said the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning when weather is so hot, dry, and windy that a single spark can cause a fast-moving wildfire. It said the warnings are issued when critical fire weather is expected within the next 12 to 24 hours.

Bend Fire & Rescue urged people to clear defensible space by removing dry leaves, pine needles, and debris from roofs, gutters, and around homes. It also said residents should move combustible items such as patio furniture and décor away from homes or bring them inside.

The agency advised residents to avoid anything that creates sparks. It said that includes mowing, grinding, using outdoor equipment, and having fire pits or barbeques, and it also warned that even parking on dry grass can ignite a fire.

Bend Fire & Rescue also encouraged residents to keep a “Go Kit” ready with essentials, documents, medications, and supplies in case evacuation orders come quickly. It said people should stay alert, follow local updates, and be ready to act early if conditions worsen.

The agency directed residents to sign up for emergency alerts at Deschutesalerts.org.
