Cornell, UW Study Tracks Bird Activity in California

A new study from Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin has used a large network of microphones to track birds in the United States. The study, published on March 11 in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, focused on fire-prone forests in California’s Sierra Nevada region. Researchers analyzed over 700,000 hours of audio recordings from more than 1,600 sites covering about 6 million acres of forest. The data was gathered using bioacoustics technology, which is a method for monitoring wildlife. Lead author Kristin Brunk, a postdoctoral research associate at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, said that the extensive coverage helped the team draw detailed conclusions about species activity across various locations.
