**Cold Weather Benefits Maple Trees, Says Cornell Expert**

According to Adam Wild, director of Cornell University’s Uihlein Maple Research Forest and co-director of the Cornell Maple Program, this year’s deep snowpack and cold weather have been favorable for maple trees in New York. The snow has acted as an insulator, keeping the ground from freezing. This condition is important because unfrozen soil allows maple tree roots to absorb water, which is a key component of maple sap.

However, Wild noted a potential challenge for the upcoming spring season. He explained that if temperatures rise too swiftly, the maple sap season could be cut short, limiting the amount of sap flow. A gradual thaw, on the other hand, would provide optimal conditions for a productive maple season.

Wild’s observations highlight how weather patterns can significantly impact maple syrup production.
