On November 8, Utica University celebrated First-Generation College Celebration Day. The event, hosted by TRIO Student Support Services, aimed to honor the achievements of first-generation college students and recognize the barriers they face.

This year’s theme was “Building a Healthy Community.” The celebration included welcoming remarks from Susan Johnston, director of TRIO, and Utica University Provost Stephanie Nesbitt. A panel discussion featuring first-generation faculty was moderated by Dr. Anthony Baird, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).

Faculty members involved in the event included:

- Nicole Lawrence, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English

- Ane Caroline Ribeiro Costa, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English

- Kaylee Seddio, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology & TRIO Faculty Mentor

- Dorothy Obernesser, Associate Professor of English & Faculty Mentor & TRIO Faculty Mentor

The Utica University Health & Wellness Center facilitated an activity titled “What is a Healthy Community?” for all attendees.

The celebration reflects a national effort to encourage institutions to support first-generation college students in their educational journey.
