Wake County Approves First Farmland Preservation Plan

Wake County Government said the county has lost more than 36,000 acres of farmland over the past ten years. It described that amount as larger than the combined size of Knightdale and Fuquay-Varina.

The government said Wake County is one of the three most threatened counties in North Carolina for farmland loss. It said development continues to reshape the region and that the Wake County Board of Commissioners has approved the county’s first Farmland Preservation Plan.

Wake County said the plan is a long-term strategy aimed at protecting farmland, supporting agriculture and guiding preservation efforts. It said the plan focuses on four areas: land-use policies that support farming; programs intended to help keep land in agriculture; funding to protect farmland and the benefits farmland provides to the environment, economy and community; and related preservation efforts.

Wake County directed residents to the county news page to review the plan and learn more.
