Winter Storm Watch: Snow, Ice, Rain Ahead

Staff Report /

**Wintry Weather Conditions Expected: Snow, Ice, and Rain Transition in the Forecast**

**February 12, 2025 – 5:15 AM**

Residents of northeastern regions including the Finger Lakes, Catskills, and surrounding areas should prepare for a mix of challenging winter weather conditions beginning this evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas expecting lake effect snow Thursday evening through Friday at 10 PM.

**Timeline of Events**

Snow will start moving into the region between **6 PM and 8 PM tonight**. The snowfall will transition to a wintry mix of light freezing rain and ice between **8 PM and 11 PM**. As temperatures fluctuate, the wintry mix is expected to change into rain from west to east early Thursday morning, between **4 AM and 9 AM**.

**Hazards and Expected Impacts**

The storm is expected to bring ice accumulation between **a light glaze and up to 0.15 inches**, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions. The greatest ice accumulation is forecasted over the southern Catskills and northern Oneida County. Those commuting Thursday morning should be especially cautious, as icy conditions could cause slippery roads.

Wind gusts between **30 – 45 mph** tonight in the Finger Lakes Region might also contribute to isolated power outages, although this is not highly anticipated.

**Lake Effect Snow and Watch in Effect**

After the storm transitions to rain and tapering showers Thursday afternoon, lake effect snow will develop in the evening, impacting areas prone to such events. This stage of the storm is expected to continue through Friday evening, under the issued Winter Storm Watch.

**Forecast Challenges**

The type of precipitation and the timing of transitions remain dependent on temperature changes during the storm, as variations of just one or two degrees could affect whether the area experiences snow, ice, or rain.

Drivers and residents should stay updated on weather developments and plan accordingly for potentially slippery travel conditions and possible weather-related disruptions.
