E-Scooter Safety Regulations Announced by Police

Staff Report / cranfordlocal.org

Low-speed electric scooters, also known as e-scooters, are subject to regulations similar to those applied to bicycles, according to the Cranford Police Department. Riders must obey traffic laws, including traffic signals, lights, and road signs, and must ride in the direction of traffic.

The maximum speed for e-scooters is 19 mph, and modifications that tamper with the vehicle's governor are prohibited. Riders are encouraged to wear helmets to reduce the risk of head injuries. In New Jersey, it is a legal requirement for riders under the age of 17 to wear helmets.

E-scooters should not be operated on sidewalks. When parking these devices, riders must ensure they do not obstruct pedestrian or wheelchair access.

For safety during night riding or in low-light conditions, electric scooters must have functional front and rear lights. Riders are also advised to enhance their visibility with additional personal lighting and reflective clothing, as they may be less visible to drivers.
