Censorship of Libraries Surges Amid Rising Pressure Groups

Staff Report / Maricopalocal.org

In 2023, pressure groups increased their focus on public libraries, in addition to their ongoing efforts at schools. The number of books targeted for censorship at public libraries rose by 92% compared to the previous year. At the same time, school libraries experienced an even larger increase in censorship attempts, with a rise of 111%.

The statistics show that 54% of censorship attempts were directed at public libraries, while 39% were aimed at school libraries. Additionally, 5% of the attempts were focused on schools, and 2% were directed at higher education institutions and other areas.

Banned Books Week, which promotes freedom of reading, is taking place from September 22-28 this year. The Maricopa Library & Cultural Center (MLCC) encourages the community to enjoy their reading freedom during this week and throughout the year, sharing national censorship statistics in partnership with the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.
