Cornell Launches CubeSat, Pioneers Sail Test
Cornell University in Ithaca is set to send a student-built satellite named Alpha CubeSat to the International Space Station (ISS) this fall. The project took eight years to complete and involved more than 120 undergraduates along with industry collaborators.
Another project from Cornell, called Sailing to the Stars, is scheduled to launch in late summer. This project will test six light sails in microgravity. Researchers hope these sails could one day propel small spacecraft on interstellar missions.
Both projects are part of Cornell’s Space Systems Design Studio and are led by Professor Mason Peck, the Stephen J. Fujikawa ‘77 Professor of Astronautical Engineering.
