**Black History Month Spotlight: Dr. Ann Als, Trailblazing Physician**
Albany Medical College is honoring Dr. Ann Als during Black History Month as a pioneer in the field of medicine. Dr. Als was the first Black female graduate of Albany Medical College, earning her degree in 1970. Her journey was remarkable—she began her pre-medical studies at the age of 25 while balancing responsibilities as a married mother. Reflecting on her path, Dr. Als once stated, “My contention was, it’s never too late to do something you want to do. You have only one life.”
Following her graduation, Dr. Als completed her residency at Albany Hospital. Her career included practicing medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, serving as a teacher at Harvard Medical School, and leading research protocols for major pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Als’ accomplishments paved the way for future generations, inspiring others to pursue their goals regardless of the challenges they face.
Dr. Als’ legacy lives on through her family as well—her daughter, Joanne, followed in her footsteps, graduating from Albany Medical College in 1986. Dr. Als’ story remains a testament to perseverance and breaking barriers in medicine.
