Kahiki Polynesian Supper Club: A Tiki-Themed Landmark Remembered

Reviewed by Madi Wagner / cbuslocal.org

The Kahiki Polynesian Supper Club was a renowned tiki-themed restaurant that opened in 1961 on E. Broad St. in Columbus, Ohio. It was one of the largest of its kind in the United States and was revered for its elaborate design featuring an aviary, waterfalls, indoor huts, umbrella-topped drinks, and the sound of drums.

Founded by Bill Sapp and Lee Henry after their previous Tiki bar burned down, the Kahiki became a landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Despite its popularity, the restaurant closed its doors in 2000 due to the high cost of renovating its 9,000 square-foot property. The building was demolished and replaced by a Walgreens, now housing a Volunteers of America thrift shop.

Although the physical restaurant is no longer present, the Kahiki brand lives on through Kahiki Foods, a line of frozen meals manufactured locally in Gahanna. The legacy of the Kahiki Polynesian Supper Club remains fondly remembered by those who frequented it during its four-decade-long operation.
