Students from Woodward Park Middle School in Columbus, Ohio received training in hands-only CPR, operation of an AED (Automatic Electronic Defibrillator), and bleeding control techniques. The training was provided by members of the Columbus Division of Fire, Columbus Fire cadets, and Columbus School nurses on Wednesday, May 22nd as part of the 50th annual National EMS Week.

Firefighter Robert Kelley, the American Heart Association training center coordinator for Columbus Fire, emphasized the importance of a quick response to a cardiac event during the training session. He highlighted that in Columbus, the average response time is five minutes, and the actions taken within those crucial first minutes can significantly impact a person's chances of survival. Kelley stressed that every minute without compressions-only CPR in a cardiac arrest situation reduces the chances of survival by ten percent, but proper interventions can increase the survival rate to 80 or 90 percent.

The event involved a team of individuals from Columbus Fire including Firefighters Robert Kelley, Nya Cason, Jazzmine Towns, Nautica Smith, Jesse McKee, Quinton Echols, Kenneth Freeman, Tiffany Thomas, as well as Columbus Fire Cadets Cameron Donohoe, Chass Loving, Rhandy Grainger, Jamar Perry, and CPR instructor Jillian Gates.
